North Stradbroke Island residents warned to prepare to leave as bushfire flares
North Stradbroke Island residents have been warned to prepare to leave their homes as a bushfire threatens structures near Dunwich airstrip.
North Stradbroke Island residents have been warned to “prepare to leave” their homes as a bushfire flares again.
Ten fire crews were fighting the blaze, which broke out about 1.15pm at the Dunwich airstrip and was initially under control but on Sunday night was heading towards Alfred Martin Way.
The warning was for the area between Alfred Martin Way and Dunwich Airport.
A change in wind direction had driven the large, fast-moving fire towards structures behind the airstrip, and four of the 10 remaining crews are defending them.
Three aircraft were used to control the fire on Sunday afternoon in a joint operation between Fire and Rescue, Rural Fire Brigade and Parks and Wildlife.
Residents were directed to the Queensland Fire Department Current Bushfires and Warnings website for more information on how to prepare.
Firefighters were hoping Sunday night storms would help extinguish the blaze quickly.
There had been no reported injuries and investigations into the cause would begin once the fire had been fully extinguished.
