By 8.30am the blaze was contained to the single unit on the lower floor of the complex, preventing any further spread of the fire.

Brisbane man Levi Clamp, 32, was rushed to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he was being treated for critical, potentially life-threatening burns.

He remains in a critical but stable condition.

Neighbours Nora Wymark and Elaine Lee recalled the shock and confusion they felt as they struggled to make sense of the horror unfolding across the road.

“I looked through my window and couldn’t see anyone, so I went outside and saw it,” said Ms Wymark.

“It was very loud, I didn’t know if it was fighting or whether he was in pain. It went on for about 5-10 minutes.

“Someone came and grabbed my hose and took it.”

Ms Lee added: “I don’t think that scream is going to leave me for a while now.”

Fire and police investigators on the scene were yet to declare the cause of the incident, however, Senior Queensland Fire Department officer Malcolm Muscat alluded to multiple contributing factors.

“We won’t commit to anything because there’s a number of impacting features here. It can bring into play life dynamics and things like that.” Mr Muscat said.

“All we can really tell you at this stage is we believe the fire started potentially in his studio apartment where the bed was located at the front of the apartment,” Mr Muscat said.

Police are encouraging anyone who has information on the circumstances leading up to the event to come forward.
