Man dead after drowning at popular Gold Coast beach
A man has died at a popular Queensland beach despite desperate efforts by lifeguards and paramedics.
A man has drowned at a popular South East Queensland beach on Monday evening.
Crews raced to reports of a man in his 50s drowning at Surfers Paradise Beach just before 6pm Monday.
The man was pulled from the water and onto the esplanade where both lifeguards and paramedics performed CPR, but he was declared deceased shortly after by officers at the scene.
“Extensive resuscitation attempts were made on the gentleman but... he must have been in the water for far too long,” Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Gavin Fuller told 7News.
“Those resuscitation efforts were called off and he was pronounced deceased.”
Police remained on scene until 8.40pm. The man’s death was not being treated as suspicious.
The tragedy occurred just hours after the Gold Coast was belted by a supercell storm event.
