Cool heads prevailed in Eumundi on Friday afternoon as fallen power lines near a school put drivers and pedestrians at significant risk.

Energex commended emergency crews and residents for their prompt action.

Energex posted on social media saying it was a “scary situation which could have been worse if not for the safety smarts of customers and a fantastic response from emergency services and our crews”.

A tree on Napier Rd knocked out power to nearly 300 homes and businesses about 1.15pm.

Wet ground and gusty winds led to a large tree becoming uprooted and falling over.

It knocked down power lines that landed across a footpath and more than a dozen parked cars near the road.

It was also close to a school zone.

One of the vehicles was still occupied with the driver becoming trapped inside.

“Thankfully the driver stayed put, called emergency services and waited,” an Energex spokesperson said on social media.

“She remained completely inside her vehicle until Cooroy crews made it to the scene and made things safe.”

She escaped unharmed.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said their crews did attend but Energex handled the removal of live wires from the vehicles.

Energex said police officers acted “like lightning” to secure the area and kept everyone safe.

Energex also commended pedestrians for staying well away from the danger zone until the all clear was given.

Their crews worked into the night to restore power supply to affected houses and fix the “considerable” damage.
