Hundreds have gathered at Burleigh Heads for a candlelight vigil for young Gold Coast man Cameron Duce, who died after he was allegedly brutally bashed in the popular beachside suburb.
Cameron, 22, died in Gold Coast University Hospital last month, a week after he was allegedly assaulted during a night out in Burleigh.
Another Coast man, Austin Ballard, 18, has been charged with unlawfully striking causing death over the tragedy.
Family, friends and many who did not even know Cameron gathered in John Laws Park at Burleigh on Sunday night to pay their respects and throw their support behind a #Justice4Cam campaign.
“It was a beautiful Burleigh night with the lights of Surfers Paradise glittering in the background like a thousand candles all lit for Cam,” Cameron’s aunt Martine Watson said.
“Cameron’s friends were having a laugh because every time they tried to light their candles a gust of wind would blow them out. They all laughed and remarked ‘that would be Cameron he would be having a laugh at us’. it was actually something Cameron would think was funny.”
Cameron’s family is petitioning the Gold Coast City Council for more CCTV cameras in Burleigh, which has been hit by an upsurge in alcohol-fuelled violence.
Coast Mayor Tom Tate has announced an extra 40 cameras for the suburb before the light-rail extension from Broadbeach to Burleigh opens next year.
Police have also ramped up patrols in the area.
