Traffic has been gridlocked on multiple major routes in Brisbane’s north, leaving commuters with a hellish trip home filled with delays.
The Gateway Motorway, Southern Cross Way, Sandgate Rd and Gympie Road were all at a near-standstill in places, with multiple other roads also clogged as drivers seek alternative routes.
Just after 5pm, on the Gateway Motorway, northbound traffic was backed up from Exit 108 on Moreton Drive, all the way to the merge with the Bruce Highway at Bald Hills, and beyond.
Traffic was slow along the length of Gympie Rd, from Kedron to the Bruce Highway, with motorists almost at a standstill all the way from Zillmere Rd to Hoyland St.
The story on Sandgate Rd was much the same, with the queues beginning in Clayfield, worsening in Nundah and then stretching all the way through Virginia and Boondall.
Most of the congestion has now cleared.
The cause of the congestion is unknown, but an earlier crash that left traffic at a standstill on the Gateway Motorway northbound at Boondall caused knock-on effects earlier in the afternoon as motorists sought alternative routes.
Emergency services were called to the scene about 1.36pm following reports of a collision between a motorcycle and a truck, causing a large mud spill across the carriageway.
One person sustained a lower leg injury and was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition. A second person was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a stable condition.
At its worst, the crash left traffic crawling at 5km/h, with queues stretching back to Exit 108 at Moreton Drive, as well as on the Southern Cross Way, back to the East West Arterial Rd.
