A five-year-old boy has suffered serious injuries after being hit in the head by a rock thrown through the window of a train in Far North Queensland.

Police said the incident happened just after 4pm Saturday, when a rock was thrown through a train window near the James and Law St intersection.

The rock struck the boy in the head, with police calling it a “grievous bodily harm incident”.

He was taken to Cairns Hospital with serious injuries and was expected to be transported to Townsville Hospital on Sunday for further treatment.

Detectives from Cairns Child Protection Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone with relevant vision, to come forward.
