Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has lodged an appeal against the “manifestly inadequate” sentence handed down to the teen driving a stolen car who caused a crash that claimed the lives of three Queensland women.

Queensland Attorney-General Deb Frecklington has lodged an appeal against the “manifestly inadequate” sentence handed down to the teen who caused a crash that claimed the lives of three women in Maryborough.

Kelsie Davies, 17, Michale Chandler, 29 and Sheree Robertson, 52, died in a crash on April 30, 2023, after a stolen car driven by the 13-year-old boy collided with their vehicle.

On December 6, the teenager was sentenced to six years’ detention and is required to serve 60 per cent of the time behind bars.

Lisa Latimer, the sister of Ms Robertson, said she had “no faith in the justice system” after the sentence was handed down.

Ms Frecklington at the time said she was considering lodging an appeal.

“The survivor and the families of the three victims were handed a life sentence in the wake of this horrific crash,” she said in December.

“The Crisafulli Government’s Making Queensland Safer Laws are my absolute priority.”

Ms Frecklington on Monday confirmed she has lodged an appeal against the sentence given to the teen, with a second appeal to be lodged against the sentence given to Brock Andrew McDonald, who attacked a young woman and wrapped a rope around her neck while she was trying to walk home from a night.

McDonald was sentenced to two-and-half-years’ jail but released on parole considering 413 days already served. Convictions were recorded.

“I have instructed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to lodge appeals against two sentences which, in my view, fail to meet community expectations,” Ms Frecklington said in a statement on Monday afternoon.

Last month the LNP government’s Making Queensland Safer laws passed in parliament following the successful “adult crime, adult time” election campaign.
