Young Campbell spreads toy joy

Pride of Australia. Nominated for the Young Leader award. Campbell Remess 10 of Acton Park who started Project 365 by Campbell with the aim to make one toy every day for a year to donate to children in need.

AT 10, an Acton Park boy has arguably more determination than many adults.

He is surprisingly handy with a sewing machine, too.

The Mercury has been following Campbell’s story since January when he launched his Project 365.

His goal is to make a toy for every day of the year which will be given to disadvantaged children through the Royal Hobart Hospital, City Mission and the Salvation Army.

He plans to deliver most of the toys to the hospital and charities for Christmas.

He has made more than 200, including a big wooden toy box, teddy bears, baby rugs and chalkboards.

“After I got really good with the sewing machine, I did jobs on the overlocker so I could do baby hats and clothes,” Campbell said.

“When mum had [little sister] MacKenzie, Dad went shopping to buy clothes but they didn’t have any small enough, so I made some really small for the born-too-early babies.”

Paediatric oncology patients at the RHH will be the next recipients of Campbell’s generosity after the school holidays.

He has been nominated in the Pride of Australia Medal’s young leader category.

Mum Sonia Smith said she was not surprised by his determination to keep working and helping others.

“He certainly is a leader,” Ms Smith said.

“He even organises all the children. I could disappear for a month and he’d have the house under control.”
