IT is time to get behind our local heroes and give them a chance to be recognised on the national stage.

The Tasmanian Pride of Australia medal winners are now finalists in the national awards and all have the opportunity to be named People’s Choice.

The winner of the People’s Choice Medal will be announced at a ceremony in Sydney on December 11 and will take home a bronze medallion.

Burnie boys Fletcher and Spencer Connelly took home the Child of Courage medal at the Tasmanian awards ceremony on Monday and are excited to be going to Sydney for the first time.

“The boys, even days later, were still saying ‘we won, we won!’” mum Alison Lander said yesterday.

Almost two years ago, the brothers were in a horrific explosion which almost claimed their lives.

Now aged 10 and 6, Fletcher and Spencer have since endured months of intense medical treatment.
