DEBORAH Langiano says there is no greater reward than helping out children in need.

The teacher’s aide at Blackmans Bay Primary School has been assisting in the education of young people for the past 17 years and is as passionate about it today as she was the day she started.

“It’s quite rewarding because you see them come from a lower level and improve,” Mrs Langiano said.

She began her role after seeing first hand how much help was required for youngsters during the time her three children were at school.

Mrs Langiano assists several children at the school, from some requiring learning assistance through to those with special needs.

She is required often to work longer hours than teachers and does not receive pay during school holidays.

To help support her family she works a second job as a waitress two nights a week at a Salamanca Place restaurant.

She says the role of a teacher’s aide has vastly expanded since she started.

“It’s improved a lot,” she said. “We have a lot more out there for them these days. It’s only over the last few years that children with things like autism are being more recognised and we’re starting to understand more what to do with those children and how to help them along.”

Having assisted many children over the years, Mrs Langiano receives birthday and Christmas cards from some of her former charges.

For her efforts, Mrs Langiano has been nominated for a Pride of Australia medal in the inspiration category.

The annual awards, sponsored by News Corp Australia, seek to recognise the heroes in our community.

There are 10 Pride of Australia Medal categories: outstanding bravery, heroism, child of courage, inspiration, environment, courage, community spirit, young leader, care and compassion and fair go.

“I’m absolutely honoured and blown away,” Mrs Langiano said of her nomination.

“It’s fantastic that somebody out there has taken the time to say I deserve that.”
