A Cat to the very end, Geelong dual-premiership player Terry Fulton has died, aged 92.
A member of Geelong’s back-to-back triumphs in 1951-52, Fulton played 51 games for his club after being recruited from East Geelong’s premiership winning under-18 side.
Geelong Football Club confirmed Fulton’s passing on Friday afternoon and the Cats will wear black armbands on Saturday night when they play against Carlton.
Fulton’s Newtown home was dedicated to his beloved Cats, with the walls plastered with memorabilia from the club’s glory days under the legendary Reg Hickey.
As recently as May he was still at work on his collection and had asked for the Geelong Advertiser’s assistance in compiling a book celebrating all of the VFA/VFL/AFL premierships the club has won.
A fond storyteller, Fulton was part of a panel at Geelong’s season launch earlier this year and loved to tell the tales of his past.
His first VFL game came in round 19, 1949 when Richmond great Jack Dyer was playing the last of his 311-game career.
“(Dyer) was kicking goals when they were just handballing to him in the goalsquare, it was embarrassing,” Fulton recalled this year.
He would play 51 games, the majority of which came amid Geelong’s 26-game undefeated streak, still a VFL/AFL record.
That included the grand final wins over Essendon (1951) and Collingwood (1952) but chronic ankle injuries meant Fulton missed the 1953 grand final, a loss to the Magpies.
At just 24, the wingman played his last game for Geelong in 1954 and was offered the coaching job with Geelong West.
“They offered me 12 pounds and Hickey was only getting 10 for coaching Geelong,” Fulton would later quip.
The move would work wonder on the field, with Fulton’s side winning four premierships in a row from 1956-59.
He would then return to Geelong as a member of the club’s committee, club vice-president, and a member of the club’s match committee.
Fulton was made a Geelong life member in 2001.
Following Fulton’s passing, just Bill McMaster and George Goninon remain from the premiership teams.
