Will Hodgman is Australia’s new High Commissioner to Singapore

Tasmania’s former premier has celebrated his first day on the job as an international diplomat, taking to social media and posting a selfie.

FORMER Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman has flown the coop to begin new role as Australia’s High Commissioner to Singapore.

Donning an Australian flag face mask, Mr Hodgman took to Twitter on Tuesday to post a selfie outside the Australian High Commission.

“Today is my first day at the office as Australia‘s High Commissioner-Designate to Singapore. I arrive ambitious for the bilateral relationship & eager to learn & work with Singapore to advance our countries’ #health, #security & prosperity. I also can’t wait to explore the island with my family,” Mr Hodgman said.

Mr Hodgman’s appointment to the top diplomatic post was announced in November and he has since relocated to Singapore with his family.

Tasmania’s 45th premier resigned from state parliament last January, initially accepting a role as the Inaugural Chair of the Australian Business Growth Fund.

Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong slammed Mr Hodgman’s Singapore role as a “jobs for mates appointment”.

Singapore is Australia’s sixth largest trading partner.
