A NEW-look cabinet was one of Tasmania’s new Premier’s promises when he was sworn in on Monday.
And Premier Peter Gutwein has delivered, announcing himself as Minister for Climate Change, however, holding on to his Treasury portfolio, and taking up the mantle of Tourism.
Mr Gutwein will become Tasmania’s first Liberal Minister for Climate Change.

“I believe that we need to accept that the weather patterns that we are seeing are less predictable, they are more volatile and it is important that as a state, we continue with our very strong work as we have done in the past,’’ he said.
“As a state we are the lowest net emitter in the country and one of the lowest net emitters in the world.
“We have a very good story to tell in terms of what’s occurring in Tasmania but it’s about the practical actions that we can now take to ensure that we protect both life, property and the environment from the impacts of what will be a less predictable and more volatile environment moving forward.
“It will be a key priority for my Government.”
Mr Gutwein said he would remain Treasurer, but would share responsibilities with new Minister for Finance, Michael Ferguson.
“I’ll have the responsibility for our fiscal strategy, our broader economic settings and the budget, as well as a range of other matters,’’ he said.
“Michael Ferguson will share the treasury role with me by taking on the Minister for Finance role.
“He will add this to his existing State Growth and Infrastructure portfolios and this ensures there will be strong synergies in place in terms of the economy and our management of government finances.”
Sarah Courtney will become the state’s new Minister for Strategic Growth.
Mr Gutwein will take on the Tourism and Prevention of Family Violence Ministries, which were held by previous Premier Will Hodgman.
Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff will retain his portfolios of Education and Training and Mental Health and Wellbeing, and will also take on the role of Minister for Disability Services and Community Development.
Prosser MLC Jane Howlett has been elevated into Cabinet, becoming Sport and Recreation Minister and Minister for Racing.
Roger Jaensch will take on the role as Environment and Parks Minister, while retaining his Housing portfolio.
Attorney-General Elise Archer will oversee the Heritage portfolio.
“We have a very talented team, and in terms of the discussions that I’ve had with my colleagues this week, I believe I have landed a ministry that will stand this state in good stead now and into the future,’’ Mr Gutwein said.
Tasmania’s peak tourism industry body has warmly welcomed the Premier’s announcement that he will assume responsibility for the tourism ministry.
Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO, Luke Martin, said Tasmanian tourism was entering a critical stage in its development, and it was vital the Premier continued to drive the whole of government response to the challenges and opportunities presented by a growing visitor economy.
“It’s credit to Peter Gutwein that he has chosen to pick up Will Hodgman’s mantle and continue as Australia’s only ‘Premier for Tourism,” Mr Martin said.
“Having the Premier as Minister for Tourism has been so critical for Tasmania being taken seriously on the national tourism stage.
“It’s not only symbolic of how seriously Tasmania takes tourism, and its importance to the State, but it also opens doors for the industry with the airlines, Tourism Australia and the major national players we need invested in the State.
“It’s also critical to address the challenges and opportunities we’re experiencing as an industry – most of the pressing issues and challenges we’re experiencing as a sector sit beyond the tourism portfolio, in training and workforce development, infrastructure, and our Parks services – that is why it is so critical for the Premier to take the portfolio and drive a whole of government agenda.
“We look forward to working with Premier Gutwein, as we write the next chapter in Tasmania’s evolution as an outstanding visitor destination.”
