Lyons MP Rebecca White has clarified she isn’t spending a “single taxpayer dollar” to fund her trip to the USA, where she is volunteering on the Kamala Harris campaign trail.

The former Tasmanian Labor leader took to Facebook to say she was on leave to be in America.

“So you all know, because this is important too, not a single taxpayer dollar has funded this trip. Not my economy grade flights. Not my accommodation (I’m currently sleeping on an air bed in a spare room thanks to the generosity of friends),” the Facebook post said.

Voting is underway in the USA and Ms White said the outcome of the election would shape the future, including Tasmania’s.

“It will either give permission for hate or it will stand up against it and declare we will protect freedom and decency” she said.

“That’s why I’m here. I’d prefer to go to the source and stop the hate from spreading rather than sit back and hope it doesn’t happen.”

This comes after the Tasmanian Liberal Party claimed Ms White was in the USA while being paid by the Tasmanian taxpayer.

In response to a social media post to Ms White’s trip, the Tasmanian Liberal Party took a swipe at the former leader and appeared to throw support behind US presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Tasmanian Liberal Party appears to take side on US election

Initial: The Tasmanian Liberal Party appears to have thrown support behind US presidential candidate Donald Trump on social media, in a comment which takes a swipe at former Tasmanian Labor leader Rebecca White.

In a Facebook comment on a post by a Tasmanian media company, the Tasmanian Liberals took aim at Ms White, who is in the US, and has joined the campaign for Kamala Harris.

“0/3 in Tasmanian elections as leader- hope the midas touch continues!” the party said in a comment.

Social media users were quick to point out the party appeared to be taking a side.

“Tasmanian Liberals only confirming what all the thinking people know. Thanks for further showing your true colours,” one social media user said.

“Does that mean you’re supporting a Trump presidency?” another said.

“So the Tasmanian Liberals endorse Donald Trump to win the US elections?” another commenter said.

Tasmanian Liberal Party state director Peter Coulson said: “Unlike Labor’s Rebecca White, *we are commentating only* and not actually campaigning in the US election while being paid by the Tasmanian taxpayer.”

Ms White posted from America across social media platforms on Monday night, that she had “joined the campaign in Philadelphia” and that she was part of a team doorknocking for Harris.
