THE State Government is still figuring out what do about moving the wastewater treatment plant at Macquarie Point.

The plant needs to be relocated to fully unlock the site which has a potential $1 billion worth of investment.

The cost of removing the sewerage works has been estimated at $145 million, but there is no agreement on who will pay and when it can be moved.

In State Budget estimates, Labor MP Scott Bacon asked State Growth Minister Matthew Groom when Tasmanians would see substantial progress at the Hobart waterfront site and what the government was doing about the wastewater plant.

“When are we going to see tangible progress at Macquarie Point … What is the time frame in your mind?” Mr Bacon said.

Mr Groom said there was tangible progress at the site, which was being used for public events including Dark Mofo.

Mr Groom said the government was still taking advice from the Macquarie Point Development Corporation around the wastewater plant.

“Part of the advice we are getting back from the Corporation at the moment is around that … we are committed to the removal of the plant,” he said.

“There is potential for significant development to happen at the site prior to the removal of the wastewater treatment plant.”

The wastewater treatment plant is a sticking point in future plans for the Macquarie Point site.
