Push for Victoria Cross honour for Tasmanian war hero Teddy Sheean continues

The Prime Minister has been questioned about the Federal Government’s consideration of a Victoria Cross honour for a Tasmanian war hero.

THE Hodgman Government has written to the Prime Minister to seek an update on the campaign to recognise the actions of a Tasmanian war hero.

December 1 was the 77th anniversary of the sinking of HMAS Armidale and the bravery of Ordinary Seaman Edward “Teddy” Sheean.

State Veterans Affairs Minister Guy Barnett said Sheean’s actions on board the vessel during World War II were considered by many in the community to be deserving of a Victoria Cross.

TALKING POINT: IF THIS ISN’T WORTH A VC, WHAT IS?

Mr Barnett said he was involved in an ongoing campaign to see Sheean’s bravery recognised in this way. The campaign has been spearheaded by nephew Garry Ivory.

It resulted in the Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal holding hearings in March, at which the Chief of Navy, Sheean family representatives and Mr Barnett made presentations.

Mr Barnett said he had sought an update from Prime Minister Scott Morrison about the Government’s consideration of the tribunal’s recommendation.

The State Government is also seeking proposals from not-for-profit organisations to develop a retreat for veterans and their families and friends.

The successful applicant would renovate a former Parks and Wildlife Service shack at Dago Point, Lake Sorell, in Tasmania’s highlands.

Mr Barnett said $100,000 would be provided to support the renovations needed to make the retreat a reality, which he said would support positive mental health and wellbeing outcomes for veterans, former serving personnel and their families.
