PRIME Minister Scott Morrison spent a relaxed morning strolling through Hobart’s Salamanca Markets ahead of his address at today’s Liberal Party conference.
In his first official trip to Tasmania as PM, Mr Morrison was accompanied by Liberal Senator Eric Abetz as they stopped for selfies with marketgoers and wandered among the many stalls at the popular tourist spot.
The PM took time out from his busy schedule to buy a merino-wool scarf for his wife and stopped to pick up a few vegies from the Hmong growers.
Interestingly, the pair also browsed through the Wilderness Society stall.
While there they graciously accepted a couple of “Keep Tassie Wild” stickers.
Wilderness Society volunteer stallholder, Joe Vagunda, said that along with the stickers, he sent them off with a clear message that the country’s wild areas need protecting.
“The Prime Minister and Eric Abetz were passing so I invited them in to talk,” said Mr Vagunda.
“Mr Morrison was trying to understand where the Tarkine was. I made sure he left with a species habitat protection sticker for the prime ministerial limo and a message that we need new laws to properly protect threatened species and wild nature. The current ones are failing.”
Mr Morrison will fly out of Hobart later today, at the conclusion of the party conference that’s taking place at Bellerive’s Blundstone Arena.
