Firebrand Tasmanian senator, Jacqui Lambie, has paid tribute to supporters and donors after emerging victorious in a close-run federal election count which concluded on Tuesday.
Ms Lambie was declared the winner of Tasmania’s fifth Senate seat by the Australian Electoral Commission, more than three weeks after the 3 May national poll.
Ms Lambie retained her seat, alongside fellow Tasmanian incumbents Carol Brown (Labor), Claire Chandler and Richard Colbeck (Liberal), and Nick McKim (Greens).
Labor newcomer, Richard Dowling, also claimed a spot in the Senate chamber.
After enduring a protected three-way race for the final two seats with Labor candidate Bailey Falls, and sixth-placed Mr Colbeck, Ms Lambie said she was grateful for the chance to serve her state for another six-year term.
“Representing Tasmania and bringing the voices and concerns of the people to Canberra, is what gets me out of bed in the morning,” she said in a statement.
“My focus is on the Tasmanian people, especially those doing it tough.
“Interest rates are coming down and that’s good, but for many Tasmanian families it will barely touch the sides.
“I want to ensure the recommendations from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide are implemented properly and that they make a real difference to the lives of veterans and their families.
“A big thank you to all of my supporters, everyone who put up signs, stood at pre-poll and gave me donations.
“Much love and hugs, Jacqui.”
Meanwhile, a joint sitting of both houses of Tasmania’s parliament has ratified the nomination of union organiser, Josh Dolega, to replace Anne Urquhart in the Senate.
Ms Urquhart stood down from her upper house position to launch an ultimately successful campaign for the House of Representatives seat of Braddon.
Mr Dolega said he was honoured to be endorsed as the state’s newest senator, vowing to work hard for all Tasmanians and engage with the community.
“I grew up in Spreyton and lived on the North-West Coast for most of my life, and I’m looking forward to moving back home to the North-West Coast with my partner as soon as possible,” he said.
“In the interim I will hit the ground running and spend time each week up on the Coast.
“I’m looking forward to meeting with constituents, businesses and community groups.
“I want to thank members of the ALP who have reached out for their kind words of support and their faith in me undertaking this important role.”
