HOBART City Council’s intention to create a broad-scale vision for the city to help shape development and define the way we live as a community is another step closer to realisation.
The project brief for the Central Hobart Precincts Plan, which aims to address a number of current issues including the housing shortage and building heights, was presented at a special planning committee meeting last night.
Committee chair Helen Burnet said much of the plan focused on the “greater good” for the community, including the socio- and environmental-impacts of building heights, how the city will link to neighbouring municipalities as part of the city deal, ensuring good land use strategies, and providing efficient public transport.
HOBART CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON PLAN FOR CITY’S FUTURE
The proposed precinct plan covers 64 city blocks and would also address the development of medium-density housing within the city’s bounds marked by Davey St to the south, Burnett St to the north, Campbell St in the east and Molle and Harrington streets in the west.
“We’re thinking about Hobart’s place between the mountain and the river, where we are as a city and how we can best use that to develop our economy,” said Cr Burnet.
“We want to look at housing affordability and how we can increase the density in areas and yet still have neighbourhood feel, which ties in with our community vision.”

The project’s expected planning period is two years.
“It’s a fairly ambitious time frame but we want to start delivering. We know full well we have a housing shortage and we need to address that now,” Cr Burnet said.
The project is scheduled to go before a full council for endorsement in a few week’s time.
