A FEDERAL Labor government could tie Tasmania’s federal health funding to improved access to affordable abortions.
The Federal Opposition has already pledged to build a $1 million reproductive health hub in Tasmania to provide surgical pregnancy terminations through the public system.
Welcoming federal Labor health spokeswoman Catherine King’s announcement, Franklin Labor MHR Julie Collins said: “We have a practical, fully funded plan to deal with this issue.
“The hub would provide surgical terminations as part of the public hospital system, and federal Labor would contribute to its ongoing costs under the usual commonwealth-state arrangements.”
“All Tasmanian women should be able to access safe and affordable legal health services in the public health system in Tasmania if they choose to do so.”
Tasmania was without a low-cost surgical abortion provider for about 11 months.
A new provider, Melbourne-based Hampton Park Women's Health Care, started taking referrals last month.
