BURNIE Mayor Steve Kons has denied rumours he has been suspended from council.

But Ald Kons confirmed a fellow alderman had lodged a complaint about him to the Code of Conduct Panel.

“There was a complaint lodged against me by an alderman,” he said. “I think it’s one alderman being cheeky.

“I’m not suspended from council at this point in time.”

Local Government Minister Peter Gutwein said he was aware that a code of conduct determination report had been issued.

“This is a matter between the respondent to the complaint and the Code of Conduct Panel, and it would therefore be inappropriate for me to comment any further at this time,” he said.

Alderman Kons was voted Burnie mayor in 2011, and before that in 1996. In the years in between, he was in state politics, as a Labor MP for Braddon and deputy premier from 2006 to 2008. He was elected in October with 55.9 per cent of the vote after the distribution of preferences.
