AS human poo and garbage piles up on Tasmania’s Bruny Island, Premier Will Hodgman has assured State Parliament that action is being taken to address community concerns.

The tourism hotspot — known for its cheese, fudge, seafood, wine and wilderness — has experienced a 24 per cent spike in visitors during the past year, state MPs were told today.

“Bruny Island is being loved to death because of a dramatic increase in tourism numbers ... but there’s been no change in infrastructure or services,” Greens MP Rosalie Woodruff told the Lower House as she raised the dark business.

“There’s an extreme lack of toilets and rubbish bins: a massive spike in reports of human poo and illegal rubbish dumping.”

EDITORIAL: CHALLENGES ON THE HOME FRONT

Ms Woodruff called on Premier Will Hodgman, who is also the state’s Tourism Minister, to take immediate action to improve facilities on the island, where she said residents are outraged.

Mr Hodgman denied the Liberal administration had done nothing to handle extra visitor numbers to Bruny Island, pointing to increased ferry services and said further works are in the pipeline.

“I have had a sensible discussion with the mayor about some of these matters and how we might work together ... to provide the necessary infrastructure and amenities to make sure Bruny Island is properly cared for and looked after,” Mr Hodgman said.
