This year’s Northern Territory road toll has reached 50, after a pedestrian was struck and killed in the Red Centre capital overnight.

Police said a male was struck by a silver SUV station wagon on Telegraph Tce in Alice Springs at 12.59am on Sunday, September 15.

The male was sadly declared dead at the scene.

Police said the driver was travelling south on the road when the crash occurred and “sustained no injuries and is assisting police with their investigation”.

“A crime scene has been established on Telegraph Terrace, investigations are ongoing and both south bound lanes are currently closed and are expected to remain closed for some time,” police said.

“Traffic diversions are in place and drivers of light and heavy vehicles are advised to obey all road signs in the area.”

Motorists should avoid the area, police said, and seek alternative routes of travel.

No charges have been laid in relation to the incident.

Police are urging anyone with more information – such as CCTV or dashcam footage – to get in touch through 131 444, quoting reference P24253735.

Northern Territory police have been contacted for further comment.
