It was the quintessential definition of initiation by fire for Palmerston Magpies product Sandy Brock as he played in his first AFL match at the weekend.

The towering 22-year-old was tasked with marking GWS’ nine-goaler Jesse Hogan at the back in the Round 4 clash.

Irrespective of the hammering West Coast took, losing 20.12 (132) to 7.9 (51), the debutant earned the praises of his new coach Andrew McQualter post match.

“This is going to sound crazy, but I actually thought Sandy Brock defended quite well and showed some moments,” McQualter said.

“Their class, their supply and his (Hogan) talent was just a bit too much for us at times.

“We’ll support him. We’ll go back and look at the tape. I’m sure Sandy hasn’t gotten all of them right, but I think ultimately when you have that much ease with your flow of ball through the middle of the ground, you can put Stephen Silvagni on him and he still would’ve kicked a few today.”

Brock put up some handy stats in his first hitout having 12 disposals, five marks and making one tackle.

The nephew of the late great Supercars legend Peter, started his journey with the Magpies, playing through juniors to its premier men’s side as a teen.

The club showed its support and love for Brock on Facebook posting how proud they were to have another AFL player among the ranks.

“From Palmerston Magpies to AFL brilliance, Sandy Brock’s debut for the West Coast Eagles is nothing short of spectacular,” the post said.

“The former junior Magpie dazzled in 75 games for Palmerston, leaving an indelible mark on the club with his skill, heart, and perseverance.

“Now, he’s ready to make waves on the AFL stage, bringing his black-and-white grit to the blue and gold battlefield.

“The entire Palmy community stands tall with pride as Sandy embarks on this exhilarating journey.

“From a local hero to a rising star, his story inspires us all. Once a Magpie, always a Magpie, but now you’re ready to soar.”

Brock’s debut has been a long time in the making after he was picked up by the GC Suns a few years ago.

The 198cm back toiled away in the Suns’ VFL outfit playing 59 matches and was a big part of the premiership winning team.
