The vibes are electric at the Cowboys Leagues Club as it gears up for Townsville’s biggest NRL game of the year, with fans converging from around the country to soak up the finals excitement.

“Super pumped” about Saturday’s game between the Cowboys and Knights, Cowboys Leagues Club marketing manager Abbey Cullen said the club had been buzzing throughout the week with tables solidly booked out, and limited edition T-shirts and Cowboys cut-out heads selling like hot cakes.

She said there were plenty of activities, entertainment, and giveaways planned, both pre- and post-game, with Finals Fest kicking off from 5pm.

“Fans have been invited to come on down and grab their limited edition finals flag (with hundreds available) and we’re also offering face painting as well for cowboys colours,” Ms Cullen said.

“We’ll have live entertainment going on in the background from the early afternoon, and then the famous Cowboys Stampede will kick off at 6:30pm.”

She said the Townsville Drum Collective would get the party started by performing at the club’s foyer for about 10 minutes before the hyped crowd stampedes towards Queensland Country Bank Stadium at 6.45pm.

“We also live stream that on our Facebook, and we have people from all over the world that watch that every game, which is really cool,” she said.

While the Cowboys players weren’t making a post-game appearance, she said the leagues club was hosting the official post-match function where a fully-signed jersey and gold membership for two, would be given away, with festivities continuing into the early hours.

Footy final to showcase new Flinders Lane

As footy finals fever grips Townsville, the welcome mat will be rolled out at Flinders Lane for a public screening of Cowboys v Knights NRL game and to showcase the CBD venue’s recent upgrades and renovations.

Situated at 376 Flinders Street, opposite City Lane, Flinders Lane will begin welcoming visitors from 4pm on Saturday, where they will be able to enjoy pre- and post-match drinks and watch the elimination final for free on two massive 5m x 3m drop-down screens.

The property realises the vision of Townsville businessman Martin Locke, who collaborated with Townsville City Council to transform the buildings which formerly hosted Discount Jeans and Sports Power in 2018.

“We’ve always had a vision of creating a vibrant, unique CBD experience,” Mr Locke said.

“Now that Flinders Lane has evolved into a dedicated events space, we’re excited to see it come alive with the community, especially during key events like this weekend’s Cowboys game.”

Originally envisioned as a food and retail precinct hosting nine outlets, Mr Locke couldn’t bring himself to follow through on the plan, despite “fast foodies” clamouring to secure spaces.

Inspired by the Gold Coast’s eclectic night market Miami Marketta, he pursued an alternative approach, spending millions over the past year to dramatically transform the property into a fully licensed, dedicated events venue with five distinct spaces.

Opening for the footy, The Laneway is an open air space with modern New Orleans vibes, The Parlour has an Art Deco flavour, cocktail bar, and plush seating, while The Manhattan has New York vibes, a full bar, and access to a large balcony overlooking The Laneway.

Flinders Lane also boasts a fully equipped commercial kitchen known as The Galley, and The Underground, a large speak-easy-style space which is currently under development.

“While Flinders Lane is available to hire for corporate and private events, we are excited to host our own events that create unforgettable experiences and showcase Townsville’s potential as a vibrant urban hub,” he said.

“This weekend’s game is just a glimpse of the excitement and energy we plan to deliver in the future.”
