February 7, 7.30am: A man allegedly dragged a woman by her hair into an Alice Springs home in full view of cops, responding to an unrelated domestic violence incident.
On Friday morning Southern Watch Commander Andrew Dunn said police were responding to reports of a “domestic disturbance” at a unit complex at Larapinta at 11.50pm, Thursday.
Mr Dunn said while officers were speaking with the victim of that domestic violence incident, they spotted a man in a neighbouring home “drag a female by her hair into that unit”.
He said they immediately responded to arrest the 34-year-old man, and he is due to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on Friday charged with aggravated assault and breaching both a domestic violence order and his bail.
Mr Dunn said the 38-year-old woman was taken to hospital, with non-life threatening injuries.
“It appears that she’s been punched a couple of times, and obviously had to have some medical treatment,” he said.
Mr Dunn said it was “uncommon” and potentially traumatic for his officers to be responding to one domestic violence incident, only to witness a different woman being attacked by her partner.
The Northern Territory has the worst domestic and family violence rates in Australia.
In November alone NT Police responded to 641 domestic violence assaults, an average of 20 a day.
The latest police statistics said more than 65 per cent of all assaults reported to police are related to domestic violence.

The youth is alleged to have broken a window to a home on Latz Crescent just before 9pm.

The youth was charged with single counts of aggravated robbery, entering a dwelling with an intent to commit an offence, theft, using an article of disguise, being armed with an offensive weapon at night.
She was also charged with three counts of breaching her bail.
Police said she would appear in court on Thursday.
Alleged copper wire thieves caught while setting fire on total ban day
February 5, 2.30pm: Two men allegedly involved in copper wire thefts for almost a year were caught while setting a fire on a total fire ban day.
Police have been investigating reports of copper wire being stolen from telecommunication pits located between the Gap and Alice Springs Airport since April 2024.
Bushfires NT alerted police that two men, aged 40 and 41, had been spotted burning copper cable casing in bushland near Norris Bell Ave about 3.45pm on Tuesday.
General duties members saw the pair burning the insulation to allegedly gain access to a large amount of copper cable.
Police arrested both men without incident and have charged them in relation to theft and lighting a fire on a total fire ban day.
They have been remanded in custody and appeared in court on Wednesday.

Kids break into Alice Springs pet store to steal toys
Tuesday, February 4, 7am: A group of children out on the streets after midnight smashed their way into two Alice Springs pet stores to steal toys.
Southern Watch Commander Dianne Ward said half a dozen children were captured on CCTV about 12.45am smashing the front doors of two pet care stores in Ciccone.
“The young kids have got in and they’ve only stolen a few items,” Ms Ward said.
“I think they’ve stolen balls and just toys, animal toys.
“Probably the damage to the doors will be the major cost there unfortunately.”
Ms Ward said “very small” children under 10 years old appeared to be part of the group of school aged kids.
The rate of young people experiencing homelessness in the Northern Territory is almost 12 times the Australian average.
The pet shop break-in comes as police also investigate an unrelated “scary” snatch-and-grab robbery in a Larapinta home.
Ms Ward said a 51-year-old woman was shocked as a mop broom handle shattered through her window at 8.30pm.
“(There were) three females wearing bandannas to cover their faces,” she said.
“One of the females reached inside the window, grabbed her bag and threatened her.”
“Very scary for the female occupant.”
Ms Ward said the women then fled the scene.
Forensic examiners will attend the unit, with investigators also seeking CCTV from the areas.
