Fisherman braves croc-inhabited waters in Darwin Harbour hoping for a bite

A Territory fisho has braved the sandbars of Darwin Harbour, where he stood in croc-inhabited waters in the hope of getting a bite.

A sandbar party in Cullen Bay resulted in chaos

A TERRITORY man has braved the sandbars of Darwin Harbour when he stood in croc-inhabited waters fishing on Saturday.

The photo posted to a local Darwin group’s Facebook page divided audiences with some saying he was croc bait while others claimed it was ‘proof the chance of getting taken by a croc were slim’.

One commenter said “just proof that the person hasn’t died …. yet.”

The photo of the daring fisho comes just a fortnight after the wild sandbar party at Cullen Bay where drunk partygoers swam back to shore, shocking both residents and local water police.

Recent reports show the crocodile population in the Northern Territory has grown to an estimated 100,000 in the last 50 years.

A report by the Territory government said the numbers were still growing and the average size of crocodiles were also increasing.

Each year the government pulls around 200 crocs out of the harbour through its trapping program.

In addition, the waters across the Top End are coming into stinger season, which will see the return of the venomous box jellyfish and Irukandji.
