A free personal safety session for seniors hosted at a Top End recreation centre has given seniors some important tips.
The Personal Safety Sessions have been developed with a focus on safety, interactivity and inclusivity, and provide attendees with safety information and practical strategies to increase their sense of safety and wellbeing in their homes and communities.
Sessions also include a practical self-defence component which can be tailored to all levels of mobility.
It was held at the Palmerston Recreation Centre.
The open door policy of the centre was abolished in February, with the council citing a reduction in anti-social behaviour as the driving force behind the decision.
The session — a partnership between Neighbourhood Watch NT, Victims of Crime NT, and Personal Protection Strategies — was funded through the City of Palmerston’s Community Benefit Scheme.
Katherine resident Pamela Dixon said the courses are both “fun” and “educational”.
“The instructor was brilliant and great to watch and learn from,” she said.
“I was delighted to have successfully pulled off some of the self-defence tactics and have been practising since.”
Neighbourhood Watch NT is a not-for-profit organisation committed to helping to create safer, better connected and more inclusive Territory communities.
Victims of Crime NT is a community organisation committed to assisting individuals and communities throughout the Territory who have been affected by crime.
