Sydney’s Christmas light wars have well and truly begun, with streets and neighbourhoods across the Harbour City battling it out to find out who has the best festive decorations.

The southwest suburb of Moorebank is home to one of Sydney’s champion Christmas light houses, with the entire neighbourhood coming out to admire the work of the Burrough family.

The home on Hennessy Ave is covered in thousands of colourful bulbs, including a giant blue illuminated Christmas tree, Santa Claus stuck upside down in a chimney and his reindoor escaping along the roof.

“I love the lights because they’re fun and I get to dance, play in the snow, and other kids that come past,” said four-year-old Brax Burrough.

Brax’s mum Mel said the family loved putting the lights up every year, not just for their son but for all the kids in the area.

The Burroughs have gone through the ordeal of setting up the lights every year for the past six years.

“People love it,” Mel said.

“Kids get to come and experience a winter wonderland, listen to music and embrace the Christmas spirit, which is all we want.”

Wanting the show to continue long into the future, the Burrough family said their goal is for Moorebank to become Sydney’s number one destination for Christmas light tourism.

This year the family has added more lights, a snow machine, decorations, trees, and even some tunes for onlookers to have a boogie too.

“All our lights are now synched to music which just adds another element, we have got a large three-metre-tree, and are going to keep adding every year,” Mel said.

“The sky is the limit for us, who knows what we could be doing next year.”

Along with providing entertainment for the community, the family will also use their house to raise money for the Miracle Babies Foundation.

The Augustus family in North Ryde plan to give the Burroughs a run for their money, and have been decorating their house with extravagant lights for more than a decade.

Trish, Darren and their daughter Amber told The Daily Telegraph it took them a month just to finish the set up in 2024.

“This time it took four weekends,” Darren said.

Their decorations go past the bright lights, even decorating their dog, Apollo, who they refer to as “Santa’s little helper”.

“He gets spoiled every year,” Darren said. Apollo is even getting a new outfit as a gift.

Despite running the massive operation for 13 years, the family plans to keep the tradition alive long into the future.

Suburbs across Sydney are getting into the Christmas lights spirit, with some areas having almost 100 homes lit up.
