Sydney weather: How to survive the sunshine after weeks of rain

It’s been weeks since Sydney residents woke to a day of sunshine. Here are our expert tips on how to survive now the incessant rain has passed.

Sydney residents woke yesterday to a brief yet perplexing scene. Instead of rain and gloom, the sky delivered unusual clarity and warmth.

Scientists refer to this phenomenon as “sunlight”.

Fear of the unknown is an understandable human trait, but sunlight is nothing to be frightened of.

Just follow these expert tips and you’ll soon be confident and carefree in even the least-dampened circumstances.

YOU DO NOT NEED AN UMBRELLA IN SUNLIGHT

It’s true! You can actually leave your umbrella at home if the weather is, as experienced climate insiders say, “sunny”.

If this makes you feel vulnerable or exposed, perhaps work your way down to a smaller brolly or parasol before going totally umbrella-free.

BLUE IS NOT A BRAND NEW COLOUR

Sunlight is often accompanied by a curious change in the sky’s appearance. Despite its unfamiliarity, “blue” is a perfectly legal colour frequently noted in ancient scrolls.

Note: you do not need special glasses or medical procedures to see blue.

Your eyes are equipped with numerous tiny rods and cones already programmed to perceive blueness and transmit it to your brain.

DRIVING IN SUNLIGHT IS SAFE AND ENJOYABLE

Look carefully at the windscreen wiper control in your car. You will see that it has an “off” function. Simply nudge the control to that setting and the wipers will stop.

The elderly often insist that in olden times, perhaps between the wars, wipers spent more time “off” than “on”. This is a popular seniors’ joke played on the younger generation and has no basis in historical fact.

IN SUNLIGHT, OUTSIDE AND INSIDE ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL

This may take some getting used to, but “sunny” weather allows you to step outside while wearing your indoor clothing.

Of course, this does not apply if your typical indoor clothing involves an Only Fans account. There are laws.

THROW AWAY YOUR VITAMIN D TABLETS

Like most Sydney residents, you probably combat the onset of rickets by taking vitamin D supplements. But with sunlight, your body creates vitamin D all by itself!

Nobody knows how this works, but leading scientists believe it is a clear sign of the Almighty’s benevolence to all of creation. Which sounds about right.

THERE IS SUCH A THING AS TOO MUCH SUNLIGHT

Many, many decades ago, Australian governments warned people to protect themselves from “rays” emitted by a concealed celestial entity called “the sun”.

If you are concerned about exposure to sunlight, just repurpose your rain hat into a sun hat.

Or, alternatively, find a pharmacy shelf loaded with cobwebbed old stock that nobody has bought in years. This will be the “sunscreen” aisle.

Now get out there and enjoy the sunlight – next scheduled to appear sometime today prior to the inevitable resumption of rain.
