The construction for the new Sydney Fish Market is now complete with the $836m facility set to open in time for the Australia Day weekend.
The keys to one of the most complex Sydney Harbour projects, following in the footsteps of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, have been handed to Sydney Fish Market for completion of fit-outs.
The new markets are set to open on January 19 and is anticipated to attract more than six million domestic and international visitors, providing a front-row seat for live fish auctions.
The design showcases world-class engineering and innovation, designed by 3XN/GXN Architects in association with BVN and AspectStudios. The roof can also be lit up with multi-coloured LED lights for special events.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said this milestone is an opportunity to reflect on the hard work that has gone in to complete this magnificent building on Sydney’s harbour foreshore.
“From when it opens, this world-class building will attract millions of visitors each year and provide an enormous boost to our economy,” he said.
“Thank you to everyone who has slogged away at completing this incredible building that we can all be so proud of.”
Sydney Fish Market CEO Daniel Jarosch said he was thrilled to be one step closer to move into the new Sydney Fish Market.
“We’re excited to see our retailers’ impressive fit-outs come to life ahead of opening early in the new year,” he said.
“Sydneysiders will enjoy a last hurrah at the existing fish market over the busy festive season, while we work behind the scenes for a seamless transition to our outstanding new home.”
The market’s construction created more than 700 jobs and will sustain 700 ongoing roles as well as $670m in contracts were awarded to Australian businesses.
Retail space will double, compared to the current fish market located at the corner of Pyrmont Bridge Rd and Bank St, Pyrmont with the new building to offer a mix of local seafood traders, specialty food retailers and diverse dining options from casual takeaway to premium waterfront restaurants.
Minister for Lands and Property Steve Kamper said the new Sydney Fish Market will be more than just a food and retail precinct it will stand as a testament to sustainability and cultural connection.
“It will become a truly iconic destination on the western side of the Harbour Bridge, as the Opera House is to the east,” he said.
Multiplex ACT and NSW Regional Managing Director David Ghannoum said he was incredibly proud of the Multiplex team and their broader project partners who had brought the landmark destination to life.
Some big fish chefs have already been confirmed to work at the market including Luke Nguyen, Ho Jiak, Toru Ryu.
The acclaimed pair hatted fine diner Sushi Oe, and a GetSashimi sushi train will also be housed there.
The roof’s intelligent design will allow sunlight to seep through the upper levels, collect rainwater for recycling and generate energy via solar panels to offset the building’s energy consumption.
