Parents contacted by cops as they probe man who worked with children in Sydney’s north and CBD

Authorities have reached out to families in Sydney’s northern suburbs and CBD after a man working with children was charged with serious offences.

Parents and carers across Sydney have been contacted by the NSW Police Force and Australian Federal Police as part of an ongoing child protection investigation involving a man previously employed in roles working with children.

The man was charged by the AFP in October last year with multiple offences relating to alleged criminal behaviour involving children.

The AFP released a statement which said he is in custody and poses no current risk to the community.

“Based on information currently available, investigators believe the alleged behaviour of the man involves a very small number of children, however, the parents and carers of any child who may have had contact with the man has received a letter,” the statement said.

The investigation is being co-ordinated under the Joint Child Protection Response Program, with the involvement of NSW Health, the Department of Communities and Justice, the Department of Education and Training and the Office of the Children’s Guardian.

Families whose children may have come into contact with the man have received letters outlining the situation, along with information on available health and support services.

According to 2GB’s Ben Fordham, up to 1000 letters have been sent to families about the investigation.

While investigators believe the alleged behaviour involves a small number of children, they have taken a cautious and comprehensive approach by reaching out to all potentially affected families.

The NSW Police Force is also assisting the AFP with an extensive victim identification process.

“The letter provides instructions on how to contact a local hotline if parents or carers have concerns about their child,” the AFP statement said.

“Investigators ask those who receive the letter to read it carefully and contact the local hotline, as per the instructions, if they believe they require further assistance.”

A strict non-publication order is currently in place to protect the identities of victims, preserve the integrity of the investigation, and prevent contamination of potential evidence. Police said they were unable to comment further while that order is in place.
