NSW Health is urging the public to be alert for symptoms of measles following a confirmed case involving an infectious traveller who passed through Sydney International Airport.

The patient had recently returned from South-East Asia — where ongoing measles outbreaks are occurring in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia — and was infectious during their travel through the airport.

The traveller arrived on Vietnam Airlines flight VN773, which departed Ho Chi Minh City at 8pm on June 15 and landed in Sydney at about 8am the next day.

NSW Health has also identified potential exposure for anyone who was in the International Arrivals and Baggage Collection areas of Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport between 8am and 9.30am on that same day.

While these areas do not pose an ongoing risk, authorities are advising anyone who was present during those times to monitor for symptoms of measles up until July 4, as the virus can incubate for up to 18 days.

Dr Mitchell Smith, Acting Director of Public Health at South Western Sydney Local Health District, emphasised the importance of vigilance and early action.

“It’s important for people to stay vigilant if they’ve been exposed, and if they develop symptoms, to please call ahead to their GP or emergency department to ensure they do not spend time in the waiting room with other patients,” he said.

“We want to remind the community to make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations. The measles vaccine can prevent the disease even after exposure, if given early enough.”

“This should be a reminder for everyone to check that they are protected against measles, which is highly infectious.”
