NAPLAN school rankings 2025: Hunter schools results

The top performing primary and secondary schools in the Hunter in this year’s NAPLAN have been revealed.
Newcastle Grammar topped the list for primary schools, with numeracy scoring the best result, followed by grammar, with an average of 553 points.
In second place came St Phillip’s Christian College at Waratah, following by Tighes Hill Public School, Redhead Public School and Charlestown South Public School who rounded out the top five in the region with a 532 average.
And a usual performer for secondary schools in the Hunter, Merewether High School - known for its academic prowess - scored an average of 681 to place themselves firmly in first.
They were more than 50 points ahead of second placed Newcastle Grammar School at The Hill.
Third placed was Hunter Valley Grammar School with a 598 average, followed by St Philip’s Christian College at Salamander Bay and again another one of their campuses at Waratah.
The Daily Telegraph’s analysis of the state’s highest performing schools in this year’s NAPLAN has revealed the most improved primary and high schools, and the top performing mainstream schools that outperformed both academically selective and elite private institutions.
Every school’s performance has been analysed by averaging Year 5 and Year 9 students’ reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy results in the 2025 NAPLAN.
