A motorcyclist has died after being struck by two vehicles, including a police car, on the M4 Motorway in Sydney’s west early on Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred just before 2am near Church St at Parramatta, when a motorcycle travelling eastbound collided with a white sedan, throwing the rider onto the road.
Moments later, a marked police car from Cumberland Police Area Command, which was not responding to an incident at the time, struck the man.
It has sparked widespread delays with queues banked back at least 17km at its peak from Merrylands to Minchinbury on the M4 in a citybound direction. All eastbound lanes have now reopened and traffic conditions are gradually improving.
Police officers at the scene immediately commenced CPR until paramedics arrived. The man, who is yet to be formally identified, was taken to Westmead Hospital but could not be revived.
The driver of the sedan and the male senior constable behind the wheel of the police car were both taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
A critical incident team from Auburn Police Area Command, assisted by the Crash Investigation Unit, has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police vehicle involved was not using lights or sirens and was reportedly returning to the station at the time.
The investigation will be subject to an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
All eastbound lanes of the M4 were closed for several hours between the Cumberland Highway and Burnett St at Merrylands, but they have since reopened.
Motorists heading citybound should still allow extra travel time, and follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews, though congestion is easing.
