Emergency services were called to a fire trail off Haul Rd in Stockrington shortly after midnight, where they were told a modified Ford Fairmont sedan was performing a burnout, when it hit three people, before the driver fled the scene.
A 53-year-old man suffered critical head injuries from the incident and died a short time later.
Two women who are also believed to be struck by the sedan left the scene before emergency services arrived.
At around 2:40am, police found a burnt-out vehicle which they believe is the Ford Fairmont sedan on McFarlanes Rd in the nearby suburb of Chisholm.
Police have established crime scenes at both locations, with the burnt-out vehicle taken for forensic examination.
Detectives are hoping to speak to the driver of the Ford Fairmont or any witnesses of the incident, and are appealing for dashcam vision that can help with their investigation.
