Man, 54, attacked by pack of dogs at Blacktown in critical condition
A man who was mauled by his own pack of dogs in his Blacktown home is in a critical condition. Here’s what we know.
A man mauled by a pack of his own dogs inside his Western Sydney home is fighting for life.
Emergency services rushed to help the 54-year-old when he was attacked by three large dogs at his home on Kildare Rd, at Blacktown, about 11am on Thursday.
Paramedics treated him at the scene before taking him to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.
A Blacktown Council spokesman said the incident had begun when the three dogs attacked smaller canines on the property.
“At the request of the owners, three dogs, believed to be of the cross Bull Arab breed, were voluntarily surrendered to council and have been euthanised,” he said, adding that the council would assist with the police investigation into the incident.
One man, who wished not to be identified, said he had just arrived for a nearby job when he saw police pulling up.
“I just rocked up and saw one cop car and then a bunch more appear around the corner,” he said.
“Police jumped the fence and looked like they were ready to get their gun out or something.”
While multiple neighbours said they hadn’t seen the attack, one described the dogs often barking “fiercely” at people who walked past.
Another said she once saw one of the dogs wandering the street without a collar on.
The dog attack was the second in Sydney this week, following the mauling of a 55-year-old man in his apartment on Pyrmont Bridge Rd at Camperdown on Monday.
The dog involved in that incident clamped its teeth into the man’s forearms, severing his radial arteries and forcing his flatmate to pull the dog off him and bandage his bleeding arms.
Police forced entry to the unit alongside paramedics to gain access to the dog, which was removed from the unit along with two others.
There were 5091 dog attacks reported in 2024, up from 4823 the previous year, according to local NSW councils.
Crossbreeds topped the list of dogs involved in attacks, with 676 incidents, while American Staffordshire Terriers followed closely with 451 reported cases, according to Office of Local Government NSW data.
Inquiries are continuing.
