‘Like fireworks’:Four cars torched in south Sydney firebombing attack
Firefighters were confronted with four cars in flames, evacuating nearby houses after an explosion ripped through a quiet southern Sydney street.
Four cars have been torched in a firebombing attack in a quiet Sans Souci street, with a neighbour reporting hearing someone yell “fking dogs” moments before a loud explosion.
Neighbours on Evans St were left rattled after the loud explosion ripped through the street about 10.45pm.
The smell of burnt rubber and metal was still potent early on Saturday morning as the charred vehicles were towed away.
One neighbour said she heard someone shouting profanities immediately before two vehicles were set alight.
“I heard someone say ‘f**king dogs’, and then there was this loud boom,” she said.
Another neighbour said she heard a “big explosion”.
“There was a ‘poof’ and then sparks went flying, and there was a lot of banging. It kept happening about maybe every four minutes or so — that’s what woke me up,” she said.
“It flew all over the firefighters, but luckily they had special outfits on.”
“It was like fireworks shooting flame.”
Police said no injuries had been reported and that inquiries were ongoing.
FRNSW Superintendent Brad Smith said six trucks were sent to Evans St to respond to a “suspicious fire”, arriving about 10 minutes after the initial calls were made to dispatchers.
“Firefighters were confronted with four cars well alight, and firefighting and evacuation of nearby houses began. The firefighting efforts were focused on protecting the adjoining houses,” he said.
He said there were no injuries reported.
