Hundreds more EV kerbside chargers coming: See which areas got the most

Hundreds of new electric vehicle chargers will be installed along NSW streets under a plan to combat the number of owners running charging cables over footpaths. See our map of where they are going.

Hundreds of new electric vehicle chargers will be installed along streets across Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, under a NSW government plan to boost the number of EVs on the road and combat the growing number of owners running cables over footpaths to charge their cars.

The Minns government will spend $2.8 million on EV kerbside charging grants for five private companies, who will in turn contribute an additional $2.2 million for the installation of 549 kerbside EV chargers across 130 suburbs.

The kerbside public stations have less power than other fast-charging stations often situated near highways, and are instead designed for residents without off-street parking to charge their cars for longer periods of time.

This comes as inner city councils grapple with a growing number of EV owners running extension cords over public footpaths to charge their cars.

Leafy northern, eastern and inner city suburbs will get the vast majority of new chargers, while those in Western Sydney will be predominantly concentrated around Parramatta.

Hunter’s Hill will get 26 new chargers despite being one of the smallest LGAs, with Woollahra to receive nine. Willoughby will receive 18 while the Northern Beaches will get 66, Ryde City will get 42 and Ku-ring-gai 25.

In Western Sydney, City of Parramatta will get 70 new chargers, with Penrith and Cumberland getting 14 and nine respectively.

They will also be installed along streets in Newcastle and Wollongong.

Acting Climate Change and Energy Minister Paul Scully said the new chargers were designed to give more drivers the choice to choose EVs.

“Expanding our charging network gives drivers the confidence they need to go electric, knowing ample charging options are readily available, even if they don’t have a garage or off-street parking,” he said.

“EVs give people the chance to slash household transport costs and accelerate our journey to net-zero emissions – every EV charger installed brings us closer to a cleaner, more affordable transport future.”

The new chargers will range from seven to 22 kilowatts and will be mounted on poles as well as stand-alone pedestal EV chargers along street kerbsides and public council carparks. The majority are expected to be installed over the next 12 months.

There are currently 1200 kerbside chargers already installed across NSW amid a total of more than 3200 existing charging stations.

This latest round of funding comes after the government committed another $16.1 million in May to build 246 ultra-fast 150-350 kilowatt EV charging stations around the state. Last year the government announced a round of more than 670 kerbside charging ports across the state.
