Huge shark swarm captured on camera just metres from popular beach
A photographer has filmed an extraordinary feeding frenzy involving dozens of large sharks hunting baitfish in knee-deep water near Byron Bay.
Incredible vision has emerged of a group of large sharks in the shallows at a beach just near Byron Bay.
The predators can be clearly seen swimming just a few metres off shore at Tallows Beach in the state’s far north, with their fins and long tails coming out of the water as the waves break.
It seems apparent the sharks may have been hunting for small bait fish, with birds also able to be seen in the video diving down towards the water.
The footage was shot by photographer Jakob De Zwart who told The Daily Telegraph that he’s never seen so many at one time, and so close to the shore.
“It was less than five metres, if you were knee deep – you would’ve been in it,” the north coast photographer said.
Mr De Zwart said he spotted the unbelievable sight during his morning walk, before rushing to get a shot of it with his drone.
“Quickly I realised this thing is huge he said.”
Jakob said there could’ve been over 50 sharks in the water at the time, with most of them Bronze Whalers, but says upon reviewing his footage – he thinks there could’ve been other species.
“There were sharks everywhere, and you could clearly see them because of the water and the conditions outside the skirts of the bait ball.
“Looking back at the footage, oh my goodness, it’s nuts!”
