Police are hunting for a man who robbed a Good Samaritan at knifepoint after a late-night crash in Sydney’s southwest.
The incident happened shortly before 11.30pm following a collision involving a Volkswagen ute and a Volkswagen hatchback.
Police say a 47-year-old man driving a van stopped to assist the motorists following the two-vehicle crash on Amy St in Regents Park
But the driver of the ute turned on him, threatening him with a knife before stealing his van and fleeing the scene.
Officers launched a search of the surrounding suburbs, and patrol officers later found the stolen van abandoned near Regents Park Railway Station.
Both the van and the two crashed vehicles have since been seized for forensic examination as detectives work to piece together the events leading up to the robbery and crash.
The 18-year-old woman behind the wheel of the hatchback escaped injury but was shaking.
Auburn Police Area Command Detective Chief Inspector Allyson Fenwick said police don’t believe the parties are known to each other.
“Violence of any nature in our community is not accepted, anyone producing a knife and taking a vehicle is a serious crime,” she said.
“This was unacceptable behaviour.”
Police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to come forward as investigations continue.
