Get ready to spend the weekend outside as temps hit the thirties

Get ready for a taste of summer this weekend — NSW looks set to sweat through Sunday. But it could be a good time to hit the beach as La Nina forms over the Pacific Ocean, potentially signalling a wet few months.

Forget the woolly jumpers and blankets for a while – meteorologists are predicting a hot wet summer, with those high temperatures starting this weekend.

Sydney and The Central Coast will experience a top of 31 degrees on Sunday and Newcastle is set for 32 degrees, and 30 degrees in Bowral.

Regional parts of NSW will cop unseasonably hot conditions with Dubbo and Wagga Wagga, Narromine and Broken Hill to swelter with high temperatures of 36 degrees, 37 degrees and 38 degrees respectively.

“Western suburbs could have a few days above 30°C over the next week, possibly even reaching the mid-thirties this Sunday,” Weatherzone meteorologist Ben Domensino said.

Domensino reported that a ridge of high pressure to the south of the country has allowed hot air to build over the northwest.

“The heat will continue to brew over northwestern Australia in the coming days before a cold front crossing southern Australia helps drag the hot air towards Australia’s southern states later this week.”

Central parts of the country have been slated for a potential mid-forties rise this week.

Sky News Meteorologist Rob Sharpe reported that a La Nina ‘effect’ is currently developing over the Pacific Ocean and had a 50 per cent chance of eventuating.

“If La Nina does come into effect, Australia can expect to see an increase in wet weather from the middle of November and beyond to early December,” Sharpe said.

La Nina is characterised by heavy rainfall in early summer, as well as winter and spring, and often in northwestern Australia to the south east.

The last La Nina event in Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology reported, occurred from winter in 2020 to March 2023.

The frequency of our extreme heat events, according to the newly-released Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO State of the Climate report, have been caused by Australia’s gradual warming of around 1.51 degrees, which has mostly occurred since 1950.

The worst year on record for warming was 2019 and eight out of the nine warmest years since 1910 – when national records first began – have occurred since 2013.
