Police are investigating the cause of a major blaze that broke out at a pallet yard just after midnight in Sydney’s southwest.
Fifty firefighters and 12 fire trucks spent four hours extinguishing the flames overnight, after rushing to Pallets Inc. on Huntsmore Rd in Minto just after 12.30am following multiple triple-0 calls.
Upon arrival, crews found the 20 by 50m yard engulfed in flames, with two adjacent factories at risk.
The fire was fuelled by large quantities of timber pallets and produced intense radiant heat, melting the sides of trucks parked 20 metres away and sparking smaller fires in nearby wood stacks.
Police also attended the scene as Fire Rescue NSW crews launched an aggressive attack on the flames from all sides, before getting the fire under control around 2am.
Firefighters used a forklift to break apart burning pallet stacks in the mop-up operation.
Crews managed to save approximately 90 per cent of the yard, including timber-cutting machinery and two trucks loaded with pallets.
The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious, with Campbelltown police officers establishing a crime scene at the pallet yard to investigate the incident.
Another blaze just hours apart
A few hours after the blaze broke out at Minto, another blaze was reported eight minutes away, leaving hundreds without power.
Firefighters were called to an electrical fire at 2.30am on Cornelian Ave, Eagle Vale.
An electrical kiosk on the street “blew up” according to nearby residents, before the blaze was put out by responding firefighters.
The damage left around 250 residents without electricity for hours according to Endeavour Energy’s outage reports across Eagle Vale, Eschol Park, Kearns and Raby.
The issue has since been resolved with repair works done overnight to restore power for affected residents.
