Dramatic footage has captured the terrifying moment two cars collided head-on during peak-hour traffic on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, causing a four-car pile-up and widespread commuter disruption across Sydney.

The dash cam vision shows a vehicle clipping another car before suddenly veering across lanes before slamming directly into an oncoming car, as other motorists swerve and brake to avoid the carnage.

Debris can be seen scattering across the road as traffic grinds to a halt.

The crash happened just after 8am on Wednesday and involved four vehicles. Emergency services rushed to the scene, with one person freed from the wreckage and treated by paramedics.

Two lanes in both directions were closed for nearly two hours, causing gridlock not only on the bridge but throughout surrounding arterial roads.

The chaos rippled across the city’s transport network, with some buses on the Northern Beaches and North Shore delayed by up to 40 minutes. Gridlock spilled into North Sydney, where Miller Street became choked with diverted buses — including double-decker B-Line services.

Commuters forced to switch to trains or the Metro faced long queues, including at Victoria Cross station where lines stretched hundreds of metres down the street.

Motorist Jay, who was stuck on the bridge for nearly two hours, called into 2GB from the Cahill Expressway to vent his frustration.

“I’ve been stuck on the Cahill Expressway for the last hour and a half busting to go to the toilet,” he said.

“Don’t you think it’s about time they put a bloody divider in the middle of that thing?”

All lanes reopened shortly before 10am, but the earlier disruption left a significant mark on the morning commute for thousands of Sydneysiders.

Police investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
