A man who sexually touched a woman in a lift during a night out on the Central Coast tried to dismiss the incident as an “accident” and urged his victim to “let it slide”.
Brooklyn Te Ringa, 21, pleaded guilty in Gosford Local Court on Monday to sexually touching another person without consent.
Te Ringa approached a group of women in the early hours of August 10 last year, who were drinking alcohol in Burns Place Park, outside Gosford Station.
He asked the group for directions to the Gosford Hotel, then walked off in that direction.
About 15 minutes later, he returned and asked for a drink of their alcohol.
Court documents state the victim and her friends gave him a drink in the hope he would leave them alone.
The group later walked to Gosford Station and sat on platform two to wait for a train.
At 3am, Te Ringa approached the group again and sat down between the victim and her friend.
The victim felt uncomfortable and, after about six minutes, got up to go to the bathroom with her friend. They returned two minutes later and sat back down.
Shortly after, the victim and her friends got up and walked to the elevator. At the same time the offender got up and spoke to his friend nearby.
“Shortly after, the accused followed the others to the elevator. While in the elevator the offender brushed past the victim,” police facts state.
“As he did, he reached down and grabbed the victim’s pubic region over her pants.”
After the assault, Te Ringa told the woman: “Let it slide, just this once it’s an accident, it was a mistake.”
The victim responded: “Why would you do that? I don’t know you.”
They all exited the lift, with the victim and her friends leaving the area, while Te Ringa remained.
On August, 29 last year, police arrested and cautioned Te Ringa where he was taken to Riverstone Police Station and placed in custody.
Te Ringa will be sentenced at a later date.
