Aussie global electronic stars dethrone pop and rock artists at the ARIA Awards
The ARIA Awards nominations list is dominated by the electronic superstars who are taking over the world and reshaping the sound of Aussie music.
ARIA Awards nominations queen Ninajirachi is the new face and sound of Australian music, as our electronic artists dethrone rock and pop stars as our No. 1 music exports.
The 26-year-old producer and DJ raised on NSW’s Central Coast claimed eight nominations with debut record I Love My Computer, including Album of the Year and Best Solo Artist, for the annual music celebration in Sydney this week.
The ARIA Class of 2025 is overrun with electronic stars generating up to one billion Spotify streams a month, including stadium-sized superstars Dom Dolla, Fisher and Rufus Du Sol, and acclaimed talent such as Confidence Man and Young Franco.
Our electronic musicians are among the most streamed artists by fans in America, the UK, Germany and Brazil, and perform to hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
Ahead of the ARIAs on Wednesday, Ninajirachi and her genre-bending album of glitchy electro-pop songs claimed two major gongs last week, the Australian Music Prize and Triple J’s Album of the Year.
But she remains shocked that slowly, but surely, her music is becoming embraced by mainstream pop fans, and industry gatekeepers who vote for the awards.
“My long-time followers who have supported me for so long is one thing, and that’s my everything, but then for people to like it who are so far outside of my immediate circle, that’s also really cool and really surprising,” she said.
Stephen Green, the CEO of themusic.com.au, said the ARIA voting academy’s shift towards recognising electronic music is “long overdue.”
“Artists like Dom Dolla, Sonny Fodera, Fisher and Rufus Du Sol have been the highest streaming artists for years across the world but our domestic ‘mainstream’ has just failed to notice,” he said.
“An artist like Ninajirachi is somewhat unknown to the mainstream, but there’s no doubt that it is indeed a great record and the awards become part of the marketing.”
