AI artist Unwritten Stories creates delightful Sydney snow-fest

It’s not likely to happen this year or perhaps ever again, but an AI-generated video has imagined what it would look like if snow appeared in the Sydney CBD. SEE THE VIDEO.

Can you imagine sledding down the slopes at the Domain or Moore Park?

How about the crunch of frost underfoot walking down to Bondi Beach? Or snow blanketing the sails of the Opera House?

An anonymous Instagram user calling themselves Unwritten Stories has delighted tens of thousands of social media users with their AI-generated video based on the question ‘What if it snowed in Sydney?’

AI shows Sydney in the snow

The 25-second video shows a range of imagined scenes, from snowflakes falling on the steps leading to the Art Gallery of NSW, to the icy Cahill Expressway underneath the famed steel arches of the Harbour Bridge.

For those wishing this to become reality – some bad news comes via the Bureau of Meteorology, whose long-range forecast does not support a winter cold enough for snow to fall in the capital city.

From June to August 2025, the Bureau has predicted “warmer than average” days and nights with “unusually” high daytime temperatures on Australia’s east coast.

There has, however, been a time where snow has been reported in the Harbour City; according to the State Library of NSW there was a “slight fall” of snow recorded in June 1836 for 30 minutes and a small flurry in 1837.

A fall “so incidental that very few people even noticed” was recorded in 1896 and again for a few minutes in Woollahra in 1905, and a sprinkle at Wynyard Station in 1948.

Some commenters found the funny side of the video, referring to past issues with Sydney trains and traffic during heavy rain.

“Sydney can’t drive in a sprinkle of rain, let’s be real,” one person wrote.

“There would be absolute chaos, the minute it rains or any problem with train network or buses then the whole of Sydney struggles.”
