Fairfield Hospital redevelopment is underway

Western Sydney’s health boom has made its latest leap forward with the Minns government unveiling the master plan for the $550 million Fairfield Hospital redevelopment.

The Saturday Telegraph can reveal the new vision for Fairfield Hospital will include a redevelopment of the front of the hospital, new parking zones and green outdoor spaces, under plans to maximise the site as it currently stands by integrating new facilities with existing services.

It comes after hundreds of community members and health staff provided their feedback on what they wanted to see from the new hospital, with features such as natural light, views, and simple drop-off and pick-up areas topping the recommendations.

Deputy director of emergency medicine, Dr Lucy Ban, and emergency department nurse manager Ali Razaee said the redevelopment was very personal for workers.

“Staff are very loyal to Fairfield Hospital because many belong to the community themselves,” Dr Ban said.

“This redevelopment means a lot to staff. It is validation of the work we do for this community and it means we can remain a step ahead of the future needs of our patients.”

“For us in the emergency department, it will mean modern, new facilities to deliver the best possible care for our culturally and linguistically diverse community members,” Mr Razaee said.

Under the plans, a redevelopment zone has been identified at the front of the existing Fairfield Hospital to house new clinical services.

Parking zones have also been identified close to both ends of the main hospital building, with the areas to be confirmed in the next stage of planning as NSW Health determines the location and size of the project.

Health Minister Ryan Park said the hospital redevelopment would boost the quality of healthcare in Western Sydney as the region undergoes major change.

“The release of the master plan is a critical stage when the community can have a first glimpse of the shape of the project and what it has to offer, as well as providing their valuable feedback,” he said.

The redevelopment will also mark a first for NSW Health capital works projects.

New light scanning technology has been used at the site to measure a room in a few seconds.

A body-worn scanner which bounces light off the walls provides accurate floor plans instantly without disturbing staff, visitors or patients as the technology does not capture images of people and can quickly scan both vacant and occupied rooms.

In six days, the scans captured data for 600 internal spaces in Fairfield Hospital including key service areas, the cafe, entries, roads and grounds.

With the local population expected to grow to about 210,000 residents this year, community members have been invited to have their say on the project to ensure the upgrade meets local needs.

Fairfield community members will be able to attend three drop in sessions in the next two weeks at the hospital and Bonnyrigg Plaza, or they can complete a new online survey to shape the future plans.

NSW Health confirmed construction dates will be confirmed once a builder is engaged.
