Jason Peter Jones, 34, charged after cash, drugs and baton allegedly seized following police pursuit in Maitland

A man has been charged after a high-speed police pursuit through Maitland ended in a crash, with officers allegedly uncovering cash, drugs and a weapon inside the vehicle.

A man has been charged after a dramatic police pursuit across Maitland ended in a crash and the seizure of drugs, cash, and a weapon.

Just before 11am on Tuesday, police attempted to stop a sedan travelling on Brunswick St in East Maitland however, the driver allegedly failed to pull over, resulting in police initiating a pursuit.

The chase continued through suburban streets before the sedan allegedly collided with a utility at the intersection of Chelmsford Dr and the New England Highway.

The driver of the ute, a 63-year-old man, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Maitland Hospital with minor injuries.

The alleged driver of the sedan, 34-year-old Jason Peter Jones, and a passenger were uninjured with the driver then being arrested at the scene and taken to Maitland Hospital as a precaution.

A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered $14,000 in cash, a small amount of methamphetamine, and a baton.

After further inquiries, police charged Jones with several offences including police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, driving while disqualified, possessing prohibited drugs, and carrying a prohibited weapon without a permit. He also faces two counts of having goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen.

Jones faced Maitland Local Court on Wednesday where he was not required to enter any pleas.

The Maitland man did not make a release application and was formally refused bail to reappear in court on Friday.
